Hälsingland District Court

Architecture with many faces - and a clear purpose

Two principles were important when remodelling and building Hälsingland’s new district court: that the building should speak to the site – and at the same time create order, security and structure for a legal process that has special requirements.

Facing the small-scale city street, the building shows a low-key, almost modest side, in dialogue with the existing wooden buildings. On the other side, a glazed main entrance opens onto Lillsjön and the park, while jury members and defendants are led in through discreet side entrances. Inside, too, the flows are kept strictly separate – right up to the courtrooms where they finally meet.

For the interior, we have drawn inspiration from the surrounding Hälsingland farm buildings, which can be seen in the choice of accent colours and materials. The ambition has been to give the environment a warm and solid feeling – amidst the seriousness. The loose furnishings were developed in collaboration with White arkitekter, on behalf of the Swedish Courts Administration.
